Russian to English Law/Patents Geography
урож. п. Луховка Ленинсково р-на Модовской АССР

This is from a statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs saying no information is available concerning criminal convictions of an individual.

I would like to know what the 'p' is in p. Lukhovka. I find it in English in google searches but it only seems to have the small 'p'. Does it mean anything?

Yes, certainly it could have grown from a п to пгт. Wow, what a celebration that would have been to go from a pee to a pretty good town!

thanks for pointing that out as well I totally agree it could be a пгт geographically (wiki: Посёлок городского типа — географический термин, обозначающий тип населённого пункта, а рабочий посёлок (р. п.) и дачный посёлок (д. п.) — понятия административно-хозяйственные.), and the person (asker's: урож. п. Луховка Ленинсково р-на Модовской АССР) could have been born before it became a пгт, поселок (п.) is still a settlement, although not a village, which I pointed out in the answer (village/settlement). But thanks again, before your post I did not have time to read the references.

To Fernsucht: kapura's research showed Lukhovka was a пгт. There are various settlements: urban type (already defined); work settlement (most urban population occupied in industrial manufacture; suburban (dacha) settlement (typical summer settlement with dachas); resort settlement (mostly urban population occupied in beach services. So to say settlement is not strictly correct. Read Kapura's response about Lukhovka's type. But who wants to split hairs.....

Asker's question was about поселок (п.), not пгт. п. is поселок = village or settlement; not anywhere close to urban type.

According to the types of inhabited localities in Russia, посёлок городского типа is an "urban-type settlement", which was first introduced in the Soviet Union in 1924 and is one with a mostly urban population of 3000 to 12,000.

Посёлок городского типа (п. г. т., пгт.) — тип поселения, выделенный во времена СССР. По численности населения занимает промежуточное положение между городом и селом.

В отличие от села, в таких посёлках основная часть населения (не менее 85 %) не должна быть занята в сельском хозяйстве. В посёлках городского типа в советский период минимальное число жителей должно быть не менее 3 тыс. человек (в городе — не менее 12 тыс. жителей). Часто в таких поселках было только одно главное («градообразующее») предприятие.

Одновременно с понятием «посёлок городского типа» употребляется и термин «рабочий посёлок». В большинстве своём эти понятия (на территории бывшей РСФСР и современной России) тождественны. В то же время различается сфера их употребления: посёлок городского типа — географический термин, обозначающий тип поселения, а рабочий посёлок (р. п.) — понятие административно-хозяйственное.
