This is from a report about consumer behaviour in the face of the economic crisi

Cuando se habla directamente con los consumidores, las investigaciones cualitativas realizadas por [market research company] reflejan su clara inquietud ante la situación actual, que puede resumirse en la frase “hay que echar números".

I'm guessing from the context that it means "to budget" or more literally "to do one's sums"...?

I feel this is more "consumer-speak", whereas "run the numbers" is business-speak

This is the most common informal way of putting it that I know.
Googling "have to do the math" gets 12,300,000 results...

Also quite acceptable to use in an ad-world report, which are usually quite informal in tone and lexis.
