Широко открыв глаза и замирая от предстоящего удовольствия, император уставился на статуэтку и стал ждать чудес, которые непременно должны были произойти.
Dear colleagues!
I'm not really happy with my own versions (motionless/dumb in anticipation, in motionless anticipation), could someone please advise anything better?
Thank you.

frozen/struck dumb
I don't think either of these is ideal, but I can't think of anything better.
"Struck dumb" is more commonly used than just "dumb" in this sort of expression.

in mute/wordless anticipation/expectation
I think "wordless" sounds quite literary, though I also like "mute". I can't make up my mind whether I prefer "anticipation" or "expectation"!

Dylan Edwards
: Good concise version. Going a bit further than "wordless", it could be "breathless". / - but "mute expectation" has a different feeling from the other suggestions here, and is worth considering too. More subdued and quietly concentrated.

Thanks Olga - yes, or "eager anticipation": if we also keep "mute/wordless", we could put a comma between the two adjectives to make it flow nicely

nearly swooning with anticipation of the pleasure that lay ahead
If that strikes you as being too strong or wordy, try:
...awaiting the impending pleasure with bated breath..., although the phrase "bated breath" is a bit of a cliche.
