Thanks for your help in advance.
This term appears throughout a tourist brochure - el "ayuntamiento" más extenso, etc.
I know the meaning and translate it as council when it refers to the working body and municipality when it refers to the political-geographic extension. BUT: I don't like the way municipality sounds - the biggest municipality sounds awful to me. I've seen it translated on the Internet as "county". My question is - is it correct to use county in this sense for Spain?? If it isn't, can someone think of another option?

In England, Township generally means the district or area associated with a town. However in some systems no town need be involved. The term township has been generally been made obsolete in its original form.

Asker: Problem here is distrito does exist in Spanish and is not always the same as the whole ayuntamiento area.

Explanation:
... even municipality, even though it jars on the ear ... and synonyms of the same; if it's a tourist brochure I'd vary it as much as possible ... "borough" sounds too "English" IMO, and "county" is not correct unless a count once ruled there.

They often refer to Barcelona as "el ducado" but it'd sound odd in English to call it the "duchy" all the time. Same goes for Cornwall.

Asker: I have used municipal area (this is a 60 page brochure), municipality (which I hate) - but in some cases it just doesn't work (aside from the fact that it certainly jars the ear). Taña, I'm afraid zone doesn't work - official gov. and authorities are very particular about their "zone of influence" and pollitical reach. This is meant for English people visiting Spain (in spite of being in pre-campaña electoral) so I don't mind borough sounding English unless it is also very urban.
