twerp

Hola,
¿alguien podría darme una traducción que no fuese "idiota" ni nada por el estilo? Gracias.

Tipped for the top after his teenage debut in Another Country, the upper class ***twerp*** from Essex in England made it all the way to the top in 1997 when he starred opposite Julia Roberts in the smash hit My Best Friend’s Wedding

pijo

Together with the upper class bit, to my mind "upper class twerp" is what my Spanish friends would describe as "pijo".

We have to remember that it's important not only to understand the essence of the original term, but also to find a suitable equivalent that would invoke the same reaction amongst native Spanish speakers. Little gems like this is what translation is all about - carrying something across to a different culture...

agree Paula Sepúlveda (X) : I think you're right, pijo fits with the attitude and the class.

poca cosa / insignificante

Me parece que acá no se trata de "twerp" como insulto, sino como la descirpción de la persona.
Quizás mi opción te sirva o te dispare nuevas ideas.
Saludos,
Ale.

puede ser - gracias, darwinista - Mike :)
neutral Aoife Kennedy : Hi Mike, I think these suggestions are a bit too strong - twerp isn't a very strong or offensive word - a twerp is just "a bit of an eejit", as we say in Ireland :)

I hear you. So of the "strong" words that are used actually are not that strong in certain Spanish speaking countries whereas they are in others. But it is a good point, nonetheless. Mike :)

Peer comment(s):

disagree Jennifer Levey : Very few - if any - of those alternatives in English can be considered fair 'synonyms' of twerp - and don nadie certainly doesn't fit the bill here. // You're right - I should have 'disgareed' outright, rather than merely suggesting that your webref

neutral Aoife Kennedy : I agree with mediamatrix - most of the synonyms are somewhat wide of the mark. This is one of those gems that doesn't tranlsate easily into another culture. An upper class twerp is not a "don nadie", more like a spoilt, rich kid who's a bit of an idio

Thank you for your explanation. I didn't intend to suggest that the synonyms were perfect, it was a mistake to post them. You live and learn!
