Comment: "Thanks. Without actually seeing the pictures in question, it's of course impossible to know which answer fits best here, but after a few nights having "ported conseil", by analogy with the rest of the phrase, rapprochement with the dictionary definition "chimérique" and this suggestion "ethereal", I settled for "the fleetingly famous". Thanks to all contributors."

: I'm not sure that a darker character couldn't also be lunaire. I'm afraid whimsical is a bit one-sided.

: I think this veers too much toward imagination, whereas the context seems more concrete (speaking of kings, heros, royals) Here's another def for reference: http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/lunaire

eccentrics, dreamers
Big Bob calls an ésprit lunaire a reveur, chimérique. Robert & Collins calls it a dreamer. Personally I see it more in the style of eccentric, though FANCIFUL is another possibility. Amélie Poulain is lunaire.

Sorry David was not sure that you would agree.
As 'eccentrics' can sometimes mean a more negative stereotype.
Eccentric Characters can relate to those you also have uplifting qualities.
