a description of a palace
This is the place built by the people who made the liqueur and it is described as 'flamboyante et atypique'.
(- and I realise that this is an easy question, I just can't think of a word that sounds right in English).

For a start.

Sheila Wilson
: "Outlandish" might work very well, seeing as the source is "flamboyante" as well as "atypique"

extraordinary
Having seen the photo Alain has posted.
It's an amazing building. Extraordinary/fabulous and extraordinary/out of the ordinary!

extravagant
I know this is straying quite a long way from a direct translation, but it came to me last night (you'd think I'd have other things to think about!) and I thought it might work well for your text.
Anyway, no harm in offering it up as a possibility!

untypical
keeping a hint at "marginal", as the word "atypique" in French.

Stephanie Frederick
: As far as I can tell, untypical is not a word.

Note from asker:
Exactly - that's very interesting. So how would you translate 'atypique' with reference to this picture, then? I wondered about 'full of character', or 'in a very individual style'. |

Discussion
What I said in the end was ' the flamboyant palace built in such a singular style', as 'atypique' is neither complimentary nor derogatory, and although I might agree that the palace looks eccentric or extravagant, that is not what is being said. I probably wouldn't have thought of this without your contributions, so thank you all very much.
