I have come across this phrase a lot in Brazil, and I would like to find a good way to translate it. I have considered: ´´to chat´´ but I don´t think this carries the same meaning as the original. ´´to exchange ideas´´ sounds strange in English. Has anyone got any good ideas about a good English equivalent for this phrase?

Comment: "Excellent. Thanks. Chewing the fat is a great phrase, and I think the perfect phrase in English to sum up the real essence of ^trocar ideias^. To talk, is also good, as it seem to cover the meaning more than to chat. Interesting to hear about the origin of the phrase also. It is very common in colloquial use in Scotland, and I am not sure if other English speakers use it a lot, but they should!
Thanks for everyone^s ideas, i^m off to chew the fat with some friends."

It doesn't sound strange to me -- I do it all the time -- and it doesn't seem to sound strange to those who produced the 642,000 or so mentions given by Google.

True enough, your sentence doesn\'t sound natural. But there are lots of others that do, for example: \"It a place where people can meet and exchange ideas without having to drink alcohol\", \"We\'re not close friends but we like to exchange ideas on various subjects, even intimate ones\", \"He\'s not someone with whom you can easily exchange ideas, he\'s too egocentric for that\". etc. But hey! I\'m not insisting, I\'ve already voted for William\'s suggestion...
