From a piece about organic produce. I know that the literal translation is "appropriate to the species" but this is a marketing piece and that sounds really clunky. What UK/US companies say when talking about the way their organic animals are kept?

I think this is very typical organic marketing jargon. Raised humanely, i.e. they have enough space and water, they're not pumped full of antibiotics, they are slaughtered in an appropriate manner (d.h. artegerecht). Humane animal/livestock husbandry might be more appropriate for a technical article.

I think you may have misread my suggestion. It means they are treated in a *humane* manner (not human) e.g. chickens have space to move around, cows have a chance to see the sky and nibble on green grass, pigs have some nice mud to root around in, etc.
