English term

I didn't get an ***expletive*** bean/cent!

English Art/Literary Forestry / Wood / Timber illegal forestry
I need a moderately vulgar answer in US English suitable for subtitles. My instructions are "do not edit out expletives unnecessarily".

In UK English, it would be

"Apart from my wages, I didn't get a sodding/f-ing bean"/"I got bugger all"

This comes originally from Russian (не хрена не вижу), but it's my colloquial American that's slipping!

I like Kim's "lousy" but I don't claim to speak Murcan.
David Hollywood Jun 21, 2010:
forget "shooting" was thinking more of "shoot" for you know what :)
David Hollywood Jun 21, 2010:
or maybe "shooting" but I like Kim's "freaking"
Jenni Lukac (X) Jun 21, 2010:
I think "apart from" is fine for American English.
Kim Metzger Jun 21, 2010:
. Except for my wages, I didn't get a freaking/lousy/stinking dime
Mark Nathan Jun 21, 2010:
Good point from Kim
Kim Metzger Jun 21, 2010:
Apart from Isn't used colloquially as much as in BE. I'd use "except for"
Have you considered... "I didn't get one damn/damned/goddamn cent"? Pretty mild, but still assertive, if you catch my drift :)
I think the usual euphemistic collocation would be "one red cent/not one red cent".

damned or frigging

Of course you can go all the way to G-damned or fucking but I don't know that it's worth it as it is impled. I hope I've spelling "frigging" correctly!

Thanks Patricia. There are readability rules in subtitling. I don't know which spelling is instantly more readable to a movie-going public.
agree Filippe Vasconcellos de Freitas Guimarães : Don't know a word of Russian so I can't speak for the equivalence, but they're definitely both great choices.

Thanks fvasconcellos.

Thanks, Deborah. Yes, the prolonged f really helps one blow off steam and get the point across.

Thanks, Rolf. This gives me kick. I write "damned or frigging" and 9 distinguished colleagues write to say which they prefer. There's a conceptual beauty in it.
