Dear colleagues,

recently, I'm experiencing some trouble with an Internet Explorer message popping up at times - and I feel it is in the context of entering ProZ, though I am not altogether sure. It does not always show up when I'm entering the ProZ page and never when I go to other sites.

It says (in German) that the performance of my computer could be increased by optimization and offers a tool (which has changing names!) to be installed to do so. Even if you click the CANCEL button or the Close button, it starts anyway. The only way to get rid of it seems to be to switch off the computer electrically without shutting down.

Has anybody had the same problem? Any cure?

Kind regards
Marcus

Hello Marcus,

You don't seem to be the only one with this problem. A couple of days ago this thread

http://www.proz.com/topic/90151

was started. Maybe Proz.com should really check this is not a problem with the site/server.
Maybe somebody sould submit a support ticket, preferably with the links to this thread and the one mentioned above.

No problem with Firefox Nov 28, 2007

Apart from setting my Firefox to block pop-up windows, I have been using Comodo Boclean monitor that continously monitors the system for trojans and other malware. I am quite happy with it. Here is a link to a website with a review of different anti-trojan programs. Hope it helps.

Maleware scan Nov 28, 2007

Hi,
First I want to second all the recommendations about the use of Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Just to be sure that you computer is not infected with any spyware I would recommend to scan it with various (free) softwares such as superantispyware, Spybot S&D, and Spyware Terminator.
Also I would recommend using the small tool named CClenaer (www.ccleaner.com) to clean the temporary internet files (and along the way other "junk" files too). Note: CCleaner will not disinfect any malware that might reside in your computer, instead it just cleans old temp files, the internet cache (including cookies). I recommend using it before the various malware scans.
That is the best you can do to make sure that the problem is not on your side.
And IE (any version) is very vulnerable to Spyware, so in order to minimize the rrisk of getting infected I would recommend (again) the use of Firefox or Opera as your main browsers.

I've found some useful information on removal of this "Malware Alarm" program. One step by step guide I found was in a forum thread over at beepingcomputer.com here.

I hope the above link is helpful.

Dump Internet Explorer Nov 29, 2007

Firefox is the most reliable one in my experience. I've had malware penetrating through Opera as well, but not from proz.com.

HTH

Piotr

P.S. Any browser can catch something depending on the sites you visit apart from proz.com and your security settings.
