Can anyone think of a similarly deprecatory English term for 'Soviet'?

sov/sovs

Another offering. Back in the 70s and 80s we (Americans involved in Russian and "Soviet Studies") used to use this term (rhymes with "stove"), but it was more general and not as pithy as the Russian term.

I would suggest "neo-Sov" for нью-совковый.

agree Dorene Cornwell : This concept is so unique to specific historical time and place that something like this variant seems the best approach

agree Vladimir Dubisskiy : yes, it's like 'sputnik' :-)) but i would not capitalize, and use 'neo' or even French 'nouveau' instead of 'new'.

brain-washed "homo sovieticus"

That definition is easier to catch by two-years college students without dictionary. Previous are very good, but for more educated people or users with dictionary
Peer comment(s):

agree Alexander Alexandrov : And it exactly conveys the meaning of the Russian word!

neutral Vladimir Dubisskiy : putting like this implies that there are NON-brain washed 'homo sovieticus' which sounds really strange (for me who IS homo sovieticus indeed).

commie

If you're looking for correspondingly derogative terms in English there's commie or pinko, but it might not fit in your context and threy're not exact translations of "sovok".
