actually in the link above you'll find "on behalf of." they are said to be interchangeable, but strictly speaking "in behalf of" means "for the benefit of," while "on behalf of" means "as the agent of"

agree maryrose : I always thought "in behalf" was US usage and "on behalf" was British English, rather than there being a difference in meaning.

thanks Maryrose. Actually I was aware of the difference as well as of the fact that they are often interchangeably used. I really got confused...I may just have misinterpreted the source.
