folklore festivals

Hy Julie,

I like to give you an English translation but there is one questions I have: "il comune" = vuole dire una cità o un comune della chiesa?

Tanti saluti, Franz
Example sentence:

The community of XXX organises (British English) / organizes (American English) folk festivals.

popular parties

I think this would be a good neutral solution, covering various types of public events and parties.

formal social events

The most natural way of translating the whole phrase is "social and cultural events" but this leaves out the formality implicit in "mondane". You could say something like "formal social gatherings and cultural events".
