I'm having difficulty translating *extérieur à celui-ci* since celui refers to a masculine noun, but which one?

I wouldn't bother translating it. "Indépendant de la volonté des parties et extérieur à celui-ci" is just saying the same thing twice, 'beyond the parties' control".

suspect an error in the french since it must be "exterieur a" the volonte ... Makes no sense at all otehrwise, IMVHO. It can't be "outside" the present contract or the event, which are the only masculine nouns in the area. Celui-ci also means the latter, which can only be volonté.

I think it refers to contract - "extérieur au contrat...". It is possible to find a better version depending on the context
