decorative cable knit
"fantaisie" is sometimes used to mean a clothing element which is decorative or "faux", while other times it refers to something more "fanciful" or fun. Maille torsadée can describe cable-knit garments (if the item in question is a sweater/jumper), or a twisted chain (if the item in question is jewellery). Do you have an image or further description of the item?

Comment: "I prefer your 'decorative' as it is slightly more neutral than 'novelty'. I'm afraid I don't have a picture, I'm flying blind. Many thanks"

cable knit and fancy knit
These are pretty common terms for patterns in knitting

If it's one single pattern then I'd say "fancy cable knit"

Or it might not be about the overall pattern, but about single stitches, ie "fancy cable stitch" or "cable stitch and fancy stitch"

: this is a fairly specialised field, one of those I don't work in and therefore turn down job offers

: It sounds like he's describing a clothing label, not a knitting pattern. I agree that cables are the likely object of description though :)

novelty cable knit
The term "fantaisie" in fashion terms can often be translated as "novelty." "Maille torsadée" does indeed mean "cable knit," so this is a reasonable translation of the whole phrase. It gets many hits in an online search (see one example below.)
