¿Existe alguna diferencia entre estos dos verbos que se pueden traducir al español como "alquilar" o "arrendar"? Estoy traduciendo un texto en inglés al español pero creo que originalmente el texto era alemán, el hecho de que siempre aparezca el binomio: "lease or rent" (como diferentes posibilidades) ¿puede tener su origen en el alemán?

Filippo tiene razón cuando dice que no es lo mismo "leasing" que arriendo. En Chile, al menos, el "leasing" es una forma especial de arriendo; se trata de un arriendo a plazo fijo en el que el arrendador tiene la opción, cuando el plazo expira, de pagar una cuota adicional y pasar a ser propietario del bien. Esto lo he visto usado en el caso de coches y computadoras (ordenadores). Supongo que en otros países será lo mismo, sobre todo en el Cono Sur. Saludos.

alquilar / arrendar

Los dos verbos significan lo mismo, es decir "Ceder o adquirir por precio el goce o aprovechamiento temporal de algo"
Pero hay una sutil diferencia:
ALQUILAR: se usa cuando se habla especialmente de una finca urbana, un animal o un mueble.
ARRENDAR: se usa cuando se habla especialmente de obras o servicios.

Si se habla de coches hay mucha diferencia entre el alquiler y el "leasing":
