English term

medical condition

English Medical Medical (general) drug research
Here is the text from Infrmed consent form for a drug research. Does "medical condition" mean "disease" here or mean just a combination of each word's meaning -"medical" and "condition" (in other words, meaning "state of health", "condition of health")?

If you choose to stop being a part of this study, you must first notify the Study Doctor immediately so that a plan can be provided for your continued medical care, if need be. At the time you stop taking part in the study you will be asked to return for a final safety evaluation that will include gathering information about your current ***medical condition*** and conduct of any protocol required procedures. For your own safety, you should go through the termination procedures any time you leave the study, similar to procedures noted at the “end of treatment visit”, and make arrangements for your follow up care.

Discussion

Shera Lyn Parpia Dec 8, 2007:
The clinical study must be about a medicine for some problem, or they couldn't evaluate it's efficiency! So they are probably asking about the specific problem that they are trying to find a medicine for.
Shera Lyn Parpia Dec 8, 2007:
I think that it means anything that is "not healthy"- anything that could set you apart from a healthy person. You're translating documents for a clinical trial, I presume. They want to nothing that could alter the results of their study.
Vitali Stanisheuski (asker) Dec 8, 2007:
Yes, I understand "medical condition" in general. It means what you have described. But in this particular text, can it mean simply "state of health", whether it is considered healthy or not (for example they just want to know person's state of health)? How do you perceive this text as a native speaker?

Sorry. I hit enter before finishing my explanation. I have translated over 100 informed consent forms and positively know that in the final visit, whether it is the last study visit scheduled or because the patient decided to leave the study, the patient's state of health is assessed.

agree Dr Sue Levy (X) : yes in this example it's definitely the state of health (or illness if you like) - especially since it's qualified by "current"

any state of health that is not considered healthy

for example, including things such as infectious and non infectious diseases, allergies, inherited conditions such as sickle cell anemia, osteoporosis, etc etc whether or not you are being treated for them
