English to Portuguese translations [PRO]
Medical / health care plan
English term or phrase: Referral
In most situations, your Primary Care Physician must give you a referral to see a Specialist. Always check with your PCP before going to see a Specialist.

I have come up with the phrase “Requisição de Consulta” as a viable translation for Referral. However, I am guessing, I am not sure whether or not this term is actually used in either Portugal or Brazil. How about “Encaminhamento?”

Your answer may be in English or in Portuguese: whichever you feel more comfortable with. However, I’d prefer to get a response from someone currently living either in Portugal or in Brazil who has actually been involved in medical translations rather than get answers drawn from a search source such as google and so on and so forth. Thanks very much, guys.

Thanks a lot, China. Regardless of the fact that you did not submit any reference, your response does sound accurate: nothing beats true experience. Thank you much.

Recomendação

Explanation:
Esta palavra pode ser traduzida por recomendação, tanto na área médica como noutros campos. Diz-se que um médico "recomenda" um doente a um colega da especialidade relevante para o caso. A "recomendação" poderá não ser feita necessáriamente por carta; pode ser feita por telefone. A palávra referral (no caso der outro sentido)também pode ser aplicada ao enviar uma pessoa a um departamento apropriado para tratar de um determinado assunto.

agree  Paula Vaz-Carreiro: This is not bad at all! And the explanation is also quite correct, especiallty when Jorge says "referral" applies not just to doctors and patients. To be honest I'm not sure which word would be most used in Pt-Pt or Pt-Br...
