Discussion

Claire Nolan Mar 8, 2010:
Definition of 'figuratif':

From: http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/figuratif

Also, definition of 'figurative art':

Figurative art, sometimes written as figurativism, describes artwork—particularly paintings and sculptures—which are clearly derived from real object sources, and are therefore by definition representational.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figurative_art

So I think both answerers are heading in the right direction.
David Vaughn Mar 8, 2010:
Is this a monography or a one person exhibition? Is this a monography or a one person exhibition? Seems like they MIGHT be purposely be making a big deal about there just being one figurative painting - as if the artist is known only for abstraction...

Selected

a single figurative painting

I think it probably means "a single" or "one only" here, rather than stressing it is unique - on the assumption that most paintings are unique, this is more likely to be the meaning here. And I would stick to figurative as in the French. It is the most common term in English.

only one representational / realism painting

Popularly called “Realism,” representational or figurative painting is the benchmark of all other art. It addresses its subject directly. ...

Realism in the visual arts is a style that depicts the actuality of what the eyes can see.

Thank you Chris
neutral David Vaughn : Definitely not "realism painting". "Only one" is a bit strange...

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : would be "realist painting" - if applicable - but that's certainly not synonymous with "figurative"

neutral B D Finch : Both your references are clearly not written by artists. Any depiction on a 2D surface can only approximate, but not depict "the actuality (sic) of what the eyes can see". Agree with David and Jim.
