one-way switch

As opposed to a two-way switch.

You know, when you have to go to the end (2) of a corridor, turn on a light there so you can see, then go back to the other end (1) of the corridor to turn off the light you had switched on to see you to the other end (2) of said corridor.

Funny thing is, with a one-way switch you have to go two ways, repeatedly, to a) see and b) save electricity, whereas with a two-way switch you simply go one way each time and do both. See?

"va-et-vient" is a two-way switch (or system of reversible multiple switches controlling a single item).
agree Tony M : Though I think I'd be inclined to call it a "single-way" switch, as it is not literally unidrectional; but this is certianly the right idea — the OPPOSITE of a "va-et-vient" system

This may be a long time later but ...

having used this answer, my document then went on to list interrupteurs "double allumage" and "va-et-vient". I concluded that:

interrupteur simple allumage = single switch

interrupteur double allumage = double switch
interrupteur va-et-vient = two-way switch.

See ref below for a picture of a "double allumage va-et-vient"
