German term

Finanzmittelfonds

German to English Bus/Financial Accounting
I'm not sure how to best present this question, as it pertains to what I /think/ are various translations of the same term - "cash and cash equivalents".

According to proz (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/accounting/23469... Finanzmittelfonds can be translated as cash and cash equivalents. However, in the annual report I am translating, the following terms are used interchangeably to also mean cash and cash equivalents: Bestand an Zahlungsmittel, flüssige Mittel and Zahlungsmittel und Zahlungsmitteläqivalente.

Under the heading "Konzern-Kapitalflussrechnung für 20xx", this appears:

Zusammensetzung des Finanzmittelfonds:
Flüssige Mittel
./. Finanzverbindlichkeiten kurzfristig

How would I differentiate between Finanzmittelfonds and Flüssige Mittel here? Would Finanzmittelfonds be net cash and cash equivalents?

IFRS is being used and the translation is British English.

cash and cash equivalents

It's not uncommon to see a variety of German terms used in the same financial statements to mean "cash and cash equivalents". After all, financial statements have multiple authors over time, and not all of them either speak to each other or can be bothered to harmonise their terminology with what other authors have used.

For your example:
Zusammensetzung des Finanzmittelfonds:
Flüssige Mittel
./. Finanzverbindlichkeiten kurzfristig

I'd suggest:
Composition of cash and cash equivalents:
Cash funds
less current financial liabilities

agree philgoddard : I like your suggestion too. This shows that even in an age of accounting standardisation, you can't always be dogmatic about right and wrong answers.

disagree Steffen Walter : No. This would be the translation of "Kapitalflussrechnung", whereas the requested term is "Finanzmittelfonds".

disagree RobinB : Perhaps you didn't understand the question.

cash funds

See example below:

"The statement of cash flows reconciles the movements in cash
and cash equivalents, so-called “cash funds” (“Finanzmittelfond”). Bank overdrafts which are repayable at any time and which are an integral part of an enterprise’s cash management may be included in “cash funds”."

There's a certain imprecision in using "cash and cash equivalents" since that's also "Bar und Barvermögen" (http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/accounting/docs/markt-19... In the cash flow statement, finanzmittel = "financing asset" see: http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/accounting/docs/markt-19...
