German term
Kompetenzerweiterung
German to English
Bus/Financial
It's on the subject of advanced vocational training or 'Weiterbildung'. I have translated the above term as an 'extension of competencies' but I am sure there is a better idiomatic expression. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

acquiring advanced skills
for Kompetenz you could also use capacity, abilities, or something similar.
These are some examples that I would use, depending on the overall text.
Hope this gives you some more ideas.

expansion of competence
I agree that the "competencies" always sounds so stilted. But competence is not singular, it can be an overall level of ability, which is what the original intends.
While "skills" is OK, that does refer to specific skills, not to ability in general.
