I am translating specifications for securing machinery cargo for various modes of transport.
The sentence in question reads:
"Allgemein für den Schifftransport gilt, dass die Maschine quer- oder längsschiffs verladen werden kann."
For "längsschiffs", I have settled on "fore-to-aft (direction)".
For "querschiffs", I have found "on the beam" and "athwartships" but wanted to check which one fits best in the context.
