The latest link that was given by Alessandra, at the 2nd paragraph I found cinema d' artisti that is why on that link your translation is "cinema of artist". But Jenny's term was film d' artisti.

Secondo me, visto che la dizione "artist's film" non è riscontrata in inglese, la soluzione "artist's docudrama" fornita da Umberto va benissimo, soprattutto in questo caso.

According to the wikipedia/film 'Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema, and the movies. Therefore film, the word film is a specific noun and as of the subject at where we are translating the term film d' artisti.

Hopefully this may get closer to a number of web references to "french" (film d'artiste) and "italian" ("film d'artista") views on this hybrid film genre

film d'artiste / film d'artista can be showcased in the broader context of a video installation, and are a hybrid of VIDEO ART and CINEMA.

It's basically visual art featured by the cinema or by a film medium

I only found one hit for Mario Sasso and art films, but there were many for Schifano, and numerous references to art film festivals in Europe. Also, try googling "Italian art films" and see if that helps. I found many references to Italian art films of the 50's and 60's - don't know if that will help clarify or not.
