Italian term
titoli azionari
Italian to English
Bus/Financial
Finance (general)
I asked this yesterday and then the question got removed because another proz user thought I was asking about two terms. So I'll try to be more clear this time. I know "azioni" need to be "shares", I just don't know how to translate "titoli azionari" which can also be "shares".
So I'll try again now.
Phrase: "Le azioni sono rappresentate da titoli azionari"
Explanation: From a "statuto"
Under the heading "Capitale e azioni":
"Le azioni sono rappresentate da titoli azionari"
"The shares are represented by ....??"

"Titoli" in the sense of a financial instrument in Italian can be generally speaking (without considering derivatives and options) of two basic types "titoli di capitale" o "titoli azionari" on the one hand and "titoli obbligazionari" or "titoli di debito" on the other hand.

The English for this generic term is "securities" "equity securities" and "debt securities".

Oh thought I might add. "titoli azionari" is just a synonym for "azioni" just as equity securities is just another way of saying shares. An accurate but unusable translation would be "The shares consist of shares".

: As you yourself say, this is a circular translation. Don't you think it means "certificates"?//I think all shares still have certificates unless they're held through a trustee account, and then presumably the trustee has the certificate.

"evidenced by certificates" I considered that, but shares are very often in dematerialised systems these days and therefore "uncertificated", so it wouldn't be true.// No, intermediaries/transfer agents hold records, no hardcopy cert, that is sufficient.
