Italian term

raccomandata a mano

Italian to English Other Other mail
In the instructions on how to submit a tender: pervenire a mezzo corriere o per posta a mezzo "raccomandata" oppure per "raccomandata a mano"

what's the difference between a simple raccomandata and a r. a mano? Hand-delivered sounds as if the sender is delivering by hand rather than by post, and then it wouldn't be a raccomandata; all registered letters are hand-delivered by the postman anyway. Does it mean the usual "with advice of delivery"? but I've never seen it expressed in this way... basically I'm confused!

Roger Stewart Jul 4, 2012:
hand-delivered, recipient signed letter The best translation I have found is: "hand-delivered, recipient-signed letter".

It's definitely not a "registered" letter, since there is no register/ledger. The sender makes two copies of the same letter, hand delivers the letter to the recipient. The recipient checks to see if the two copies are the same and signs one copy, returning it as proof of delivery to the sender.

This is from Wikipedia and explains it better than anything else I've found.

re answers given so far The main problem here is that I have 2 terms - raccomandata and raccomandata a mano. With regard to the similar question asked before, the answer given was "hand-delivered", which I have discounted here - I don't think they are suggesting the tenders should be hand delivered.
What do you think about: "by registered post or by recorded delivery"? help given so far is much appreciated!

I think it simply means that the tenders are to be hand-delivered (raccomandata a mano - just like Gian explained below) or sent by registered post (raccomandata)

b.t.w. why discount \'hand-delivered\'? it seems to be a standard procedure with tenders.. plenty of links in google

agree Gian : "a mano" significa che non è spedita per posta, ma consegnata da una persona (non il postino), la quale si fa firmare una copia o una dichiarazione di avvenuta consegna all'interessato

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone - you have convinced me! I thought as it was "raccomandata" it had to mean by post. "

not an answer (just supporting awdotia' s answer)

The difference between "raccomandata" and "raccomandata a mano" is that the first is "raccomandata postale" and the other is "raccomandata a mano". As Gian rightly says, the person delivering by hand receives a receipt for delivery which is just as valid as the one received by the postman/mailman and the letter could be delivered, for instance, by a DHL courier or anyone else.
