Is is sufficient to translate this with "cotton" or is there some other term that is more specific?

In the garment industry, filato di cotone refers to the fibres used in weaving the cloth, so yarn or thread would not be appropriate. You could use cotton yarn for knitwear, however.

filato is definitely yarn, whether it is knitted by hand or machine.
