Portuguese to English Other Human Resources

withholdings

Withholdings são retenções (como aquelas para o imposto de renda, seguro social, etc., que são repassadas às entidades recolhedoras, como a SRF, INSS, etc.), mas como você já tem "deductions" em seguida, pode traduzir assim: "Withholdings and deductions"

neutral Shane Engel : "withheld" could imply that it could be returned at a later time, "desconto" does not ..... asker is in Portugal... so i am no longer in disagreement

It's withheld from the worker and paid to the IRS. Later on, when the worker prepares his statements for the IRS, he will deduct all these withholdings along the year, since they were an advance payment for his income tax. // The asker is in Portugal.

agree Norbert Hermann : Shane, if you pay taxes you will know you can have statutory deductions. And in the case of withholdings - which are not withheld as such but passed on to the Inland Revenue - you can reclaim any overpayments at a later stage.

Thank you, Hermann, and thanks for the explanation to our colleague.

agree Amy Duncan (X) : I've always heard the word "withholdings" in conjunction with Social Security. Shane...these amounts are indeed returned at a later time, when the party in question applies for SS benefits.

agree Amilcar : To transl descontos e deduções by "deductions & withholdings is not likely improvable. That does not mean that there is a clear and consistent word-by-word correspondence. A best "withholding" vaguely equiv to desconto, & "deduction" to dedução. Vaguely.

Thank you, Amilcar. As you say, there's no word-by-word equivalence, but the whole meaning is fully equivalent.

deductions

É assim que eu diria.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Shane Engel : Deductions already used as the other noun (yes, not a verb...) - Hermann: could be, but does not say "statutary" or "other" in the context (as much as we are given).

agree Norbert Hermann : Shane - first of all it is not a verb, secondly you can have deductions twice if you say : statutory (deductions) and other deductions.

(social security ) contributions

I would opt for 'contributions' as it's in the context of social security/ National Insurance.

Data for statutory social security contributions were calculated using details provided by the Inland Revenue regarding the amount of National Insurance paid in conjunction with NES data for gross wages.
Peer comment(s):

agree sheena : if "deductions" is already being used in the sentence, this would easily be best - at least for UK English

I agree that that may be the situation in US tax system. I think it is not as clear cut in Brazil, and am only calling attention to this fact. It is difficult to get cash back in this country, credits are possible. (I am not speaking for all levels, but what I have been exposed to). Lets just keep in mind that the origin language is Portuguese. We are not interpretting an American IRS situation here.
Peer comment(s):

neutral rhandler : You're mistaken, my friend. You get your money back in Brazil, from the local equivalent to IRS (SRF). Anyway, the asker is not in Brazil, but in Portugal.
