disagree Andy Schwieter : The courtyard is outdoors, so it's only well-lit during the day. I think difano refers to it being an "open lawn" or perhaps just a "lawn." EDIT: Oops, you're right that "lawn" is a bad choice, but I still think it's an "open patio" instead of brigh

a stone-paved lawn? hmmm...
agree Christina Townsend : I agree with Susana here, the photo also shows a courtyard (there is no mention of a grass lawn) - perhaps I would say "bright courtyard"

open portico/porch

One of the meanings of “lonja” (according to Simon & Schuster’s dict.) is portico or porch.

Lonja 3. f. Atrio algo levantado del piso de las calles, al que regularmente salen las puertas de los templos y otros edificios.

porch P Pronunciation Key (pôrch, p rch)
n.
1. A covered platform, usually having a separate roof, at an entrance to a building.
2. An open or enclosed gallery or room attached to the outside of a building; a verandah.

Porch : The reception space situated at the entrance to a church or cathedral.

Diáfono is often translated as “open” when it refers to space. I get the idea of a portico with open sides.

I've come back to this question because I have just run into "lonja" in the text I'm working on, and the sentence said "con un patio o lonja delantero"--and there was no portico in the photo of my building. I did a quick search for "Palacio de las Cadenas" to see if I could find the photo of your building. If yours is in Úbeda, then portico isn't right--it doesn't have one. On that basis, I would go with "open forecourt"--as I said, diáfano here refers to the "sin obstáculos" meaning, not light.
