Hi everyone.
I received an email this morning from an individual contacting me on behalf of Dun & Bradstreet Translation Solutions. The email text did not appear to be from a scammer, the language seems correct and there are no tell-tale typos. But there are some red flags that show this is most probably a scam:
- The sender's email address is [email protected], does not use an email with the corporate do... See more Hi everyone.
I received an email this morning from an individual contacting me on behalf of Dun & Bradstreet Translation Solutions. The email text did not appear to be from a scammer, the language seems correct and there are no tell-tale typos. But there are some red flags that show this is most probably a scam:
- The sender's email address is [email protected], does not use an email with the corporate domain address.
- A quick visit to Dun & Bradstreet´s webpage shows that this is not a translation agency but a data management company. There is no mention of translation services anywhere in this webpage.
- The use of "Dear Linguist" instead of my name.
- Parts of the text are odd, like mentioning that this was a "confidential and secure" invitation, which sounds weird.
- Contact through Whatsapp instead of email.
- Mentioning that this was a "time-sensitive" offer, pressuring me to reply immediately.
I copied the email text below for your reference.
No mention was made to payment or other such details, but they asked for my CV and other personal documents, so there's a possibility that their goal is to impersonate translators.
Scammers have been extremely active these past 3-4 months, we must carry out our due diligence when contacted by new clients because it's not hard to fall for one of these scams if we're not careful.

This is just a stupid scam, and I've been getting offers like this at least once a day from October.
They are all like this one, just a different sender.

Dun & Bradstreet is a well-known USA global supplier of business information and research. It has subsidaries all over the world but AFAIK doesn’t have a translation agency.

I received exactly the same message a couple of days ago, but signed Christelle Dun, always from that company, which is a data management (not a translation) company.
Looking better, their street address "103 JFK Parkway, Short Hills, NJ 07078, USA" corresponds to a curve in a New York park... with only grass and trees, no buildings! While the real Dun & Bradstreet company is based in Florida.

If you read this sentence opening any email, you can safely delete it / block the sender, whatever without reading further. This has been a scam opening line since oh, the beginning of this century.

I have just received an email from some Lucy Medson saying she belongs to Dun&Bradstreet, she offered me a quite big translation job on a subject which does fit my specific background, but to be translated into Chinese (!!) I am a Spanish native speaker and I work English/French into Spanish. So I emailed them back to confirm whether they were interested in translating it into Spanish. They answered in a few minutes confirming they wanted this job translated into Spanish, and telling me to con... This person, naturally, does not exist. But the thing that I regret the most is that I didn't know this fraudulent action so I sent my cv to this email... Now I am a little concerned that these people have my personal information, not quite sure for what.. Still I feel a little st***d not knowing this before hand.

This is clearly a scam.
Too many red flags: a vague project description, no rates, no language pair specified, communication through Telegram/WhatsApp instead of a corporate email address, and a claimed association with a well-known company that doesn't match the contact details provided.
