Powwow Report: Beijing

Report submitted by: Dominique Laurent

First of all, thanks to all of you for coming!

What was to be a “free flowing chat” between 10-15 people was not possible with 51 people attending. So please excuse me if I was sometime very directive :-)

Special thanks to Louis Huo, ProZ member, Wendy and Derek, from N.E Courtyard Hotel, who helped me a lot with the Powwow organization.

Beijing Powwow April 19th 3-6 pm
Networking, tips etc…

1th part:

General discussion about the following topics:

How to advertise oneself?

How to develop working relationships with companies and freelance agencies?

Rates and quality: in general and in China.

Are translations' agencies useful or not?

We were lucky enough to have attendees from all sides of the language business: starting and established translators, interpreters, language students and translation agencies, so that the exchange of ideas and experiences were quite interesting.

Break

2d part:

Each attendee introduced him/herself: Name, language pairs, specialization.

Break

3d part:

Free networking.

Participants showed interest for a new meeting in a couple of months.

Thank you, Dominique! It was a very successful Powwow! Nice place, nice people...

It is very hard to find a topic that 51 people are interested. However, free networking gives us more opportunities to know more colleagues.

Hi everyone!
First of all, thank you, Dominique, for organizing this powwow! It was great to see the faces behind the names. I definitely picked up some interesting ideas too. Unfortunately, I did not get to talk to everyone, so I really hope we can get together again soon. Did anyone take any pictures? I had brought my camera but then totally forgot about it. It would be great to get copies of the pictures!
Hope to see you all soon!
Bea

Dear Dominique,

Would it be ok if I bring two more friends over, one is a professional translator also and the other is just a friend who's interested in translation.

Thanks.
