...but it doesn’t just yield to anybody.
I'll appreciate any suggestions.

Discussion

Andrew Vdovin (asker) Jul 21, 2006:
Thanks everybody for all your versions. But am still searching. How about 'it is not easy for everyone to acquire'?
Or: "does not reveal itself to EACH and EVERYONE" (to avoid the complete/selective refusal problem pointed out by David)
Thank you Dmitry, but I don't think 'to be its master' works in this context, since there is no talk about being its master at all - the fan, once found, is to be given to someone else.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Jul 20, 2006:
Vladimir Dubisskiy Jul 20, 2006:

not everybody can be it's master

IMHO
Note from asker:
Dmitry, you probably mean 'its master' (no apostrophe)? Thank you very much.

it won't give itself to whoever

1. I like my version :)
2. I would greately appreciate comments from the native speakers (no matter positive or negative )
Peer comment(s):

neutral David Knowles : It would have to be "[just] anyone", and the difficulty is to distinguish between a complete refusal and a selective refusal.

disagree Libero_Lang_Lab : though you can also lay your hands on something, in UK colloquial English at least, the meaning is a little too prosaic for this context I think

it can evade whoever it wants to.

disagree Libero_Lang_Lab : one would say this of a person or even perhaps an animal, but not of an object, however magical it might be!

I have looked for this expression on google and could not find a link referring to an object, so thank you for clarification.

it doesn't show itself to anybody

chooses who to obey

Your version is fine for spoken language, but relies on an emphasis on "anybody". When reading, it's vulnerable to an unintentional change in word order: "just doesn't yield to anybody".
I'm not sure that the two languages have the same nuances for "yield", "evade". To me they sound like устпупать, and that doesn't satisfy your овладеть, so I've moved away from the original a little.

"reveal itself" seems to be the best. We then have a choice between "chooses who to reveal itself to" and "doesn't reveal itself to each and everyone". I've also thought of "doesn't reveal itself to every Tom, Dick and Harry", but the register of this is a bit low for a story like this. You could also vary my answer a little: "is choosy about who to reveal itself to".
Note from asker:
Yes, David, I see what you mean, thank you. Then, what about this one: ...doesn't yield to each and everyone. Or, as Aleksandr has suggested: ...doesn't reveal itself to each and everyone. Can this solve the complete/selective refusal problem?

it reveals itself only to a select/chosen few

or perhaps:

it submits to the will of only a select/chosen few

rather lofty sounding, but then if you are translating some sort of Harry Potteresque yarn, then perhaps it would not sound out of place.
Peer comment(s):
