Does anyone know what this means as I have checked it on the Internet and it seems to be used for knapsack type bags and for shoulder bags - any help much appreciated.
Context : features in a list of products -
"Sacs fourre-tout, parapluies, porte-documents, porte-monnaie, bourses, sacs de villes."

That would seem to cover it. Check ebay.fr and search "sac de ville" - lots of pictures of mainly shoulder bags - some with backpack-type straps, but you may not want to include that term as it conjures an entirely different imagery.

It approaches a tautology to search "city bag" to determine if this term corresponds to "sac de ville".... Better to search "sac de ville" on *French* websites to get a true idea of what the French are referring to ;-).

'Shoulder bag' is what I went for in the end. I wanted to stay away from 'city bag' as it seemed that many of the sites where it appeared on the internet were translated sites. Also two styles of bags were frequently portrayed as 'city bags' - smart handbags and tote-like bags. As handbags are specifically mentioned, it seemd more likely that this was a shoulder bag or a knapsack-type of bag. Thanks to everyone for your contributions - it really helped.

I would say "purse" .. as simple as it might seem!
In French they separate dressy purses and casual/every day purses!

it's an large size or oversize bag, usually a shoulder bag, but with adjustable straps I suppose it can be used as a handbag as well.
