French term

Annullation, résolution et résiliation

French to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) Lease Agreement
In this sentence:

What's the difference between these three terms? Annullation = Cancellation?
Résolution = Also cancellation, is it not?
Résiliation = Termination?

TIA

Discussion

Carolyn Brice (asker) May 6, 2006:
Yes It would seem so, as the following clauses talk about cancellation prior to the effective date of the lease and termination during the period of the lease.
Francis Marche May 6, 2006:
while practicing this tradition the drafter is also subtly differentiating "de facto termination" (résolution) and "advance termination" (résiliation) I should think.
Carolyn Brice (asker) May 6, 2006:
As am I! So I shall duly write numerous words that mean the same thing....
F Schultze (X) May 6, 2006:
I doubt that the author could give you a good explanation of the differences. He is just practicing a millenium long tradition from when the scribes were paid by the word ;-)
Carolyn Brice (asker) May 6, 2006:
Sorry for the spelling mistake! Annulation of course!

it would seem that it is "rescind".
Note from asker:
And what's the verb of rescission? Rescind?

agree Charlotte Allen : This should work fine, covers all the bases, so to speak, which I think is more important here than the subtle legal nuances of these words.

Peer comment(s):

agree Olga Cartlidge : Indeed, La résiliation c’est l’anéantissement du contrat pour l’avenir and it wouldnt be appropriate to bundle three different concepts into one as suggested by some
