English term

credit verification

English Other Business/Commerce (general) HR manual
This term was mentioned at an HR manual as follows:

Upon employment of an new employee:

HR department carries out the following:

Background (reference) Checks

Background checks include verification of education, professional certifications / licences, criminal history information (if available), driving licence, previous employment, military service (where applicable), credit verification (if available). The candidate should produce original educational certificates for verification.

Discussion

sergey (X) May 29, 2006:
i would also like to draw the asker's attention to the 'if available' in brackets, which proves that it CANNOT possibly mean 'credit rating'. sb's credit rating is available to any bank or credit company for a rather small fee.
Dave Calderhead May 29, 2006:
The last sentence refers to the necessity of sending the original education certificates, to avoid someone cleverly upgrading their marks on a copy.
William [Bill] Gray May 29, 2006:
... to more general items, such as criminal records, previous employment, military service and financial responsiblity (ie. credit verification). The next sentence in the text hops back to the specific educational request. That's how I understand it :-)
William [Bill] Gray May 29, 2006:
Hi monaragaei, (more room here for me to reply to your response to my comment): it seems that this list in the question goes progressively from the more directly academic information (verif. of educ, prof. clarifications...) continued...
William [Bill] Gray May 29, 2006:
Apology accepted! :-)
sergey (X) May 29, 2006:
sorry, i didn't mean to paste the whole thing - only bits that related to 'credit vefification'
credit rating is not credit verification in the context of educational certificates ...

credit good?

Have you paid all your bills on time? Are your credit cards paid up to date, or are you on-time with your payments?

Have you ever defaulted on a loan?

Have you ever declared bankruptcy?

Companies check this kind of information. For some reason they have the impression that if you pay your bills, you can be trusted. :) :)
Peer comment(s):

agree Bailatjones : yes, they want to know whether your credit (rating) is good

Yep, thank you MIchelle.
agree William [Bill] Gray : And I think Jack has given us a bit more British flavour!

Thanks Bill!
agree Dave Calderhead

Thank you, Dave.

Thank you, Hebat-Allah.
disagree sergey (X) : one can verify existence of credit or lack of it, or can do a check on sb's credit rating. semantically it sounds wrong to an educated ear in the sense that you've suggested... PS only a seemingly educated one... PSS oh, pleaase :-) i stand by my answer..

I was breaking it down into simple terms. An educated natvie speaker of English readily understands what "credit verification" means. I guess Dave's answer kind of stung you? Let it go..It will be fine, really. :) :)

credit rating

I think this is the same as credit rating, i.e. reliability for repayment of credit. It is possible to obtain a rating of someone's creditworthiness by applying to companies specializinng in this subject.
Peer comment(s):

agree Bailatjones : Yes, in this context they want to verify whether you have good credit. IMHO, Credit rating is the correct term
5 mins
Thank you.
agree William [Bill] Gray : This is a bit more British sounding, while Kurt sounds more like our cousins!!
32 mins
Thank you, though I somehow thought "credit rating" was common in the USA too.
agree Dave Calderhead

Thank you.

Thank you.
agree NancyLynn : credit rating is fine in Canada too! - companies check this for reliability, just as they ask how long you've lived at your current address, etc

Peer comment(s):

disagree Bailatjones : I'm sorry but in this context I do not think this is what they mean. Verification of education was listed first and this is a separate item related to credit history
4 mins
they ask for educational certificates again in the last sentence
disagree William [Bill] Gray : Credit can refer to university study achievments, but not in the context of this asker; here it clearly means a check on how reliable you are in fulfilling your financial committments. (It might be better just to post the weblink instead of a long post)
27 mins
that was my intention but the whole thing got pasted instead. why would they ask for educational certificates for verification then in the end, in your view?
disagree Dave Calderhead : and agree with Michelle and Bill - why don't you hide this answer to save yourself even more embarassment and keep the entries shorter
37 mins
i would suggest that you read the whole entry because it appears that you have very little understanding as to what 'credit verification' means in english in educational terms...

cerditworthiness

as an alternative to Jack's and Kurt's answers.

I am just completing a translation for a major international collection and company information firm, and creditworthiness of people and companies is constantly mentioned

oops - that should read

creditworthiness

in the answer heading

note that there is no mention that this only applies to newly graduated people.

IMHO this applies to all people being offered a job, and is very possibly a financial company or a listed company to which people with bad creditworthiness might pose a potential risk - we have a jokey poster in our office at work "Integrity can be bought!" apappl

Thanks, Bill (:-{)> I think the creditworthiness is for an indication of responsible citizenship - that they have not wasted their student loan and needed to overborrow?
disagree sergey (X) : one can verify existence of credit or lack of it, or can do a check on sb's credit rating. semantically it sounds wrong to an educated ear in the sense that you've suggested... PS the emphasis is on education, probably employing a graduate...
6 hrs
The whole sentence is concerned with background screening, in other words a security check - the implication is that everyone applying is thoroughly screened to minimise risks to the company - financial or otherwise//see new note
agree marybro : creditworthiness screening; verifying that the employee is creditworthy (has an acceptable credit rating)
