voluntary base/vedi sotto

la frase è orribile in italiano, bleah.
se vuoi lasciarlo letterale si dice on voluntary base, io cambierei e direi:
usually clients leave tips as sign of apreciation of the waiters' service.
gli da il senso di non volontarietà e suona meglio.

solo un sugerrimento comunque!!!

disagree Shera Lyn Parpia : Voluntary "base" is not English// can't I disagree without offending? The context that you quote is quite different- or let's say that the part of speech changes.

that's what it means, but you might prefer to say:"it's up to clients to decide whether to tip and how much"
