German term

pflegebewusst

German to English Marketing Cosmetics, Beauty Skin care products
as in products designed for "pflegebewusste Frauen" etc.
Is it just the same as "beauty-conscious"? Or does it mean women who care for their skin. Any neat ways of putting this in English. I am in unfamiliar territory here.

skin care-aware women / or :

women aware of the importance of skin care
Peer comment(s):

agree JAN SNAUWAERT : Jan; although, literally, the text says "care-aware". But as we are dealing with skin care products, the suggestions "works".

thank you !
agree Inge Meinzer : I like your second choice. It does seem the ST is making a conscious difference between "care" and "beauty"

thank you Inge ! I share your view.

thank you, P.D.I. !
neutral Lirka : IMO, -concscious works better than -aware

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : disagree with lirka. His "care-conscious" doesn't work.

neutral Isla : I would prefer - conscious, too.

care conscientious

women who are aware and conscientious of their appearance and well-being
Peer comment(s):

neutral Kim Metzger : conscious = aware, conscientious = gewissenhaft

ask any psychiatrist, consciousness and awareness are certainly not identical
disagree philgoddard : Kim is right. You put conscientious, not conscious.

beauty-conscious

I doon't think a literal translation works here. It means women who care about their appearance.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : yes, indeed

Thank you.
neutral Lirka : but "pflege" does not necessarily go hand in hand with "beauty". An ugly woman can be gepflegt, and a beautiful woman ungepflegt ( the so called cave women :))

well-groomed

on the offchance that it's not just skin they're talking about, but also hair, fingernails...

as opposed to "ungepflegt"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lirka : that's a slightly different thing; too poetic, actually, for English. Slovenian forum is elsewhere.

really? not poetic enough for Slovenian?
agree philgoddard : Yes, good idea.

care-conscious

depending on the context ( what kind of products are we talking about?), you can put anything next to -conscious.

health-conscious
figure-conscious...

etc.

It's not a scientific term, so you can surrender to poetic impulses :)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Jeanette Phillips : health-conscious and figure conscious sound ok but care-conscious sounds odd

agree TonyTK : "skin care conscious" is the only one so far that sounds natural. Personally, I'd even be tempted to go for "products for today's/the modern/the discerning/the contemporary woman". There's nothing worse than clunky advertising.

Just for info

"grooming-conscious" is another term often used these days, especially in relation to men, e.g.:

Masculine products and more skin care-like ingredients are on the rise as makers of personal cleansers look to connect with grooming-conscious men and moisture-craving women.
http://www.happi.com/articles/2008/11/getting-personal

As a grooming-conscious consumer, he had searched unsuccessfully for a full collection of men’s products in a market geared towards women and dismayed by the lack of choices, he set out to personally deliver a head-to-toe men’s grooming line, perfect for the modern man.
