: IMHO the "in advance" formula is not presumptuous if it has already been agreed that the other person will be helping, and it does not imply at all that thanks will not be given as a follow-up

I agree with you with regard to the follow-up thanks, that is simply what I found in many websites. As for the "in advance" formula, I believe that if there's already an agreement, there's no point in adding it to the standard "thank you". :)
