: I call it Krai if it's important to distinguish from oblast or respublika. But they all basically mean the same thing so usually I would go for 'region'.

I worked on a UN Conservation Program for 5 years that covered this area and I always used 'Kray' until someone in the Russian team expressed a preference for 'Territory'... There does not seem to be a definitive right or wrong here. It's probably a matter of making a decision based on client preference and established practice within your subject area.

: So why the confidence level 100%? That you and the UN prefer this doesn't mean you are right all around. Most Americans wouldn't know a Kray from a crayon.

: Изначально край отличался от области тем, что в его состав обязательно входила автономная область. Сейчас это не совсем так. Тем не менее, я за Kray. А давайте штаты США территориями называть, а земли Германии областями. Класс!

: I've never seen it spelled this way, and searching "kray" gives you mostly "krai"options. It also makes me want to pronounce it like "cray" in crayfish.

: The letter 'й' after vowels а, е, о, у, э, ю, я should be rendered as i similarly to English diphthongs. Choice between 'krai' or 'territory' should be based on the type of text, not the customer's preference.
