Taken from an academic paper on marketing research:
"En procédant en deux temps, il est ainsi demandé au répondant de classer sans ex æquo des paires de chaussures, matérialisées par dix cartes, en fonction de ses préférences."
I'm familiar with the expression ex aequo et bono which I understand to mean 'according to what is just and good', but the sans along with the context is throwing me here. What does the author mean?
Thank you!

rank ten pairs of shoes according to personal preferences without any tie
"sans ex aequo" means no two (pairs of shoes) can share the same rank

to give each pair a different rating
Hello,
sans ex aequo = without same rating (not a legal term here)
No two pairs can have the same rating.
materialisées par dix cartes = marked with 10 different cards??
I hope this helps.

matérialiser = indicated by 10 different cards
Each pair is represented by a different card. There must be 10 different pairs of shoes then.
Not real clear to me...
I would have have, "10 paires de chaussures, chacune matérialisée par une carte, ..."

Yeah, "matérialisées par" is best translated by "represented by"

to rank (ten pairs of shoes) in order of preference with no shared places/equal position

to classify in strict order of personal preference
....I suggest this rendering - including the word 'strict' would emphasise the fact that there can be no tied or equal places. The phrase 'sans ex aequo' may not necessarily need to be translated so literally if it is clear that each pair of shoes must have its own card.
it's probably just a question of what style or tone is more suitable for the context
