French term

la mise en geôle d'un gardé à vue

Non-PRO French to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) Policy Custody Records
Dear fellow translators,

Here is the context:

La fouille de sécurité

La fouille de sécurité est généralement le fait du chef de poste qui s'assure par là que la personne peut faire l'objet d'une mesure de rétention dans les locaux ad hoc. (un individu en état d’ivresse publique et manifeste, *la mise en geôle d'un gardé à vue*, la rétention préalable à la conduite devant un magistrat).

Many thanks again as always.
Change log

Nov 4, 2009 17:46: SJLD changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): writeaway, Rob Grayson, SJLD

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

polyglot45 Nov 4, 2009:
it's "gardé" with an accent garde de vue is the fact of placing someone in custody and the "gardé" is the person concerned
Jean-Louis S. Nov 4, 2009:
gardé this refers to the individual who is in 'garde à vue'
Travelin Ann Nov 4, 2009:
I'm not an expert in this field, but I just checked several dictionaries and only find "gardé" as an adjective.
I suppose the usage could be idiomatic, that someone who was "only" being held in the police station is now in jail (remanded).

BTW, I think you mean Police Custody in your subheading, rather than policy.
Chris Hall (asker) Nov 4, 2009:
Hi Ann It says "gardé" - I have double checked just now, but do you think it could be a typo? There are other instances in the text of "garde à vue" (policy custody).
Travelin Ann Nov 4, 2009:
Chris gardé or garde? Many ghits for garde à vue, but not for gardé. Thanks

holding a suspect in custody

This would be my interpretation, but I'm not too confident!
Note from asker:
I like this suggestion very much Anne-Marie. Simple, not too complicated and long winded and to the point. Many thanks, Chris.

I am sure you, or somebody else, will get a better translation but it is the meaning of your 'term'.
