German term

marktverantwortlich

German to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) describing a company
diese Gesellschaft ist marktverantwortlich ... a local passenger transport company is owned by the City (two thirds of the shares) but also has private shareholders (a third). I guess it means it isn't subsidised but must survive in the market but the English term eludes me. All help gratefully appreciated as always.

Agree with Steffen, all answers seem to be in answer to your interpretation. I understand the term itself differently....

IMHO we need the full source sentence or paragraph to be sure.

serves the (local) market

I find all of the other answers a bit confusing, since I'm familiar with the term itself as being responsible for a certain market, usually followed by a definition of said market. How does the sentence continue?
Peer comment(s):

agree Paul Skidmore : the whole sentence was necessary - as you rightly pointed out

I think this should fit.

Danke schön, Seehand. Frohes Schaffen!
disagree Andrew Morgan : Unfortunately it doesnt, because to paraphrase Monty Python: "Rule 1 - There is no rule 1". Market economics is fiendishly complex with very few hard and fast rules, so its a misnomer to try and force a co. to follow them.

I wouldn't call Monty Python experts in economics. Strangely enough there are quite a few such experts using the expression I've suggestes (see plenty of google entries).

Just another suggestion that might be suitable to the context.

The company has to hold its ground on the market.
