In the 1889 church minutes of a German Lutheran congregation in the U.S., one finds the comment:
"Der Pastor verlangte $350 Gehalt nebst $3 für Trauungen, Konfirmationen und Beerdigungen."
The congregation accepted the first part of the pastor's request, however...
"betr. Letzterem, nämlich Trauungs-, Konfirmations- und Beerdigungsgebühren, verlangte die Gemeinde, daß von besagter Rate abgegangen werde, worauf der Pastor schließlich einging."
