Does the character splash a lot of swearwords around? If so, you might want to make it a bit more 'colourful'.

My partner has to be a helluva (heckuva) guy

Colloquialism for colloquialism...

My partner has to be a bloody brillant/great guy

If the original uses puta madre, I think it has to follow the same line. You can even use fucking brillant I reckon
Just an idea!

Álvaro has made a really relevant point; I should have asked something similar.

If the character does use a lot of swear words you could change it to "fucking great guy" but even if you do decide my original translation is suitable, on second thoughts, I think "really great" would actually be more appropriate than just "great".

disagree Marisela Hernandez : a mother fu##er no es de la puta madre, al contrario

"cool" Motherfu##er" is someone who is EXTREMELY cool. So the sense is the same. Have a look here: http://www.dallasdancemusic.com/forums/useless-blabber/25511...
neutral Fiona Kirton : but a *cool* mother fucker is 'de la puta madre'

The thing is "de puta madre" sounds very strong, but it's a very passionate modifier... The equivalent must include something saucy, but it really will depend on the whole context, and whether a woman or a man is speaking, to whom, US or UK...
So I'd try with:

• My partner has to be a pretty damn good guy
• An awesome man
• He has to be dead brilliant
• The coolest ever
• He has to be pretty damn amazing
• Hard-core brilliant

Upping the ante... (curse-wise)

• A really fucking excellent man
• A fucking awesome man
• He has to be pretty fucking amazing
• Really fucking brilliant

And all of those combinations

We all know these exist, but here are some contexts...
