Is this for a US audience? All the suggestions sound too British to me. Those of you who have used 'liberals' - which would work as an insult in the current climate in the US - all go on to add British qualifiers.
I have rarely heard 'left-wing' in US English, though I lived in Washington, DC, for 50 years - it's not wrong, but it's odd.

@Laurel I agree with your point that right wing and left wing are used, but just not as frequently and generally not as single word descriptions for people, groups or parties. Which is why it's so hard to pin something down in this context.

@Laurel and I was merely responding to your comment, asking for clarification. I wasn't criticising you. But I take it 'leftie/lefty' wouldn't work in US English? I think the UK version of 'right-on' came from seeing films or programmes or newsreel with Americans going "Right on, man!" and so on in agreement with radical speakers. Or so I've always fondly believed.

And I was wondering what people thought of 'right-on', which surely originated in the US, but which is used pejoratively in the UK for people who hold all the correct - i.e. modishly left wing - opinions on class, race, gender etc.

Left / right in the US @Altogringo: I disagree about the non-use of right and left wing in the US. To whit, the expression "the Religious Right". And I think of myself as left-wing rather than "liberal", which does have negative connotations (when used as a noun unless qualified by an adjective). Or maybe it depends what side of the post you're on, whether or not you use "right/left"? Or generation? Anyway, from an American 30-something left-wing perspective, either left or liberal would work as an insult.

@JKuhn and @David Ronder No, I'm originally from the US and found out that progres in Spain was short for progresivos, the descriptive phrase basically used in the '70s transition era for long-haired, bearded, university intellectual hippie sorts who were front lines against the Franco regime. They would be listening to protest-style folk songs (like Dylan) as well folk-rock (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Eagles), rock 'n' roll in general, and most likely smoking pot. Punk rockers reacted against them in the '80s. That's simplistic but just so you get some idea of a term that was new to me, too.
@David, right you are there. I know wankers but not many U.S. people do, and Guardianistas and chattering class are new to me (akin to limousine liberals, I suppose). U.S. divides basically into conservative and liberal, not right wing and left wing so leftist or lefties doesn't work. And liberal probably doesn't work here in Europe the same way it does in the U.S.

British English has some very specific pejoratives such as 'Guardianistas' after the house newspaper of the liberal left (and coined I believe by London mayor Boris Johnson in his journalistic days) or 'the chattering classes'. Affix 'fucking' or 'wankers' as appropriate and they could work well for a UK readership. But a US or global English constituency would clearly need something different. Hard to find a generic term, though, as 'liberals' isn't always understood that way in the UK and I'm not sure that Americans really use 'lefties'. Maybe 'liberal left'?

It's not a literal translation of your source expression, but (at least in Great Britain) it's what an English speaker would say in the same situation.

Choose "loony" if you don't want to be foul-mouthed, or choose "f**king" if you prefer to be... err... more spontaneous.

agree philgoddard : I know "fucking" is a bit stronger than "de mierda", but I think it's OK. Loony is too weak. Liberals is another possibility (though in Europe it's more of a compliment, and in the US it's often an insult).

Yep, "loonie" is a weak word, but "loony lefties" is a fixed expression that is very common in rags like the Daily Mail. The asker can choose the option he/she likes best. Thanks for your agree and cheers.

I'd go for as literal a translation as possible here, putting the word "procressives" in inverted commas to indicate that the writer doesn't mean that the people he's talking are really progressive.

A U.S. alternative, geared towards the people who signed the statement.
This is a fairly common derogatory phrase for well-off leftists like film stars, writers, etc., who make calls for solidarity and align themselves with liberal/leftist causes but don't don't really have their asses on the line. Those would seem to be the people raising the ire of the bloggers.
I personally would saying fucking liberals but I am devoutly poetry of profanity school. It would not fit as a blog headline. Limousine liberals or leftists could.

Since it's intended as an insult, 'liberal' works fine. Since the last election in the US, liberals have switched to calling themselves 'progressives', but that's not what their opponents call them. Their opponents call them 'liberals' or 'socialists'. See my further comments under the Discussion.

In today's rhetoric, 'socialists' would be an effective insulting equivalent, but of course it's way too inaccurate and misleading.
