German term

Bewältigung der Vergangenheit

German to English Art/Literary
Dankesrede von Martin Walser anläßlich der Verleihung des Friedenspreises des Deutschen Buchhandels 1998.

Who can help me to locate a decent English version of the speech, should this exist at all.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Oct 29, 2002:
Klaus. Danke nochmals.
Klaus Danke. Das ist eine undankdbare Liebesmhe.
Non-ProZ.com Oct 28, 2002:
Babayaga. Thanks anyway.
Sara Noss Oct 28, 2002:
Hi Edith, Aplogies. I've just read your posting 'properly'. I've had a look on the net & can only find excerpts. %)
Non-ProZ.com Oct 28, 2002:
Babayaga Danke.

mastering the past

Not necessarily the "official" translation, but one possibility.

A fourth episode linked the Holocaust even more directly with West Germany's present. Between Christmas 1959 and the end of January 1960, a wave of anti-Semitic vandalism partially supported by East German agitators, tarnished Bonn's carefully established distancing from the Nazi past.8 The vandalism prompted official investigations of history textbooks and curricula, the publication of new textbooks, and increased pedagogical attention to the process of "mastering the past" (Bewältigung der Vergangenheit).

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Danke an alle.

Attck on intellectuals and the Holocaust

mastering is also a possibility, but this would be my first choice - maybe you can use both of them?

Similar to Nancy's suggestion, but used here as a verbal noun.
