Spanish term
vaqueros desgastados
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Full phrase (appears in a book, description of what the character is wearing):
"Marta lleva vaqueros desgastados con unas botas."
It´s for a US English audience.
Is there a consensus on this? I´ve seen:
- worn jeans
- worn-out jeans
- distressed jeans (not too fond of this one for the context...sounds like what would appear on a product label)
Thoughts? Other suggestions?

: Yeah. And (to Almudena) you're right: "distressed" would be new jeans made to look old.

Michele Fauble
: 'Worn' is OK, but I think 'well-worn' is better. 'Worn-out' means that they are no longer, or barely, wearable.

Depends how "desgastados" they are I guess :-)

Thanks, and nowadays they are not even made using pumice rock, they are made with the use of enzymes such as cellulase. I used to sell the enzyme to big firms like Levi´s.

Stonewashing from Wikipedia
Stone washing is a textile manufacturing process used to give a newly manufactured cloth garment a worn-out appearance. Stone-washing also helps to increase the softness and flexibility of otherwise stiff and rigid fabrics such as canvas and denim.
The process uses large stones to roughen up the fabric being processed. The garments are placed in a large horizontal industrial clothes washer that is also filled with large rocks. As the wash cylinder rotates, the cloth fibers are repeatedly pounded and beaten as the tumbling stones ride up the paddles inside the drum and fall back down onto the fabric.
