Discussion

Simon Georgiou (asker) Apr 5, 2006:
Sorry about that - I need the adjective to describe this group. I've only go the Italian "salifita". How does "Salafist" sound?
A Nabil Bouitieh Apr 5, 2006:
Can we have more text please. Are you sure this is Arabic?

salafi

From wikipedia:

"Salafi (Arabic سلفي referring to early Muslim), from the Arabic word Salaf سلف (literally meaning predecessors or early generations), is an adherent of a contemporary movement in Sunni Islam that is sometimes called Salafism or Wahhabism. Salafis themselves insist that their beliefs are simply pure Islam as practiced by the first three generations of Muslims and that they should not be regarded as a sect. Most do not like to be called Wahhabis, although this name was acceptable in the past. (cont'd)..."

Wiki says this definition is "disputed", but this should be helpful in any case.

'Salafista' appears to be the Italian and/or Spanish translation of Salafi. See:

www.repubblica.it/2004/i/sezioni/esteri/iraq33/salafiti/sal... :

"Il termine salafita (o salafista) deriva dalla parola araba 'salaf', letteralmente 'antenato'. Il primo a propugnare la 'Salafiyya' fu il riformatore..."

Perhaps someone else can confirm.

Salafis

A Salafi (Arabic سلفي referring to early Muslim), from the Arabic word Salaf سلف (literally meaning predecessors or early generations), is an adherent of a contemporary movement in Sunni Islam that is sometimes called Salafism or Wahhabism. Salafis themselves insist that their beliefs are simply pure Islam as practiced by the first three generations of Muslims and that they should not be regarded as a sect. Most do not like to be called Wahhabis, although this name was acceptable in the past.

This is also from wikipdia as Michael refered you to. Hope this helps you. Good Luck.

السلفية والسلفيين والتيار السلفى

As my colleagues were not so sure of there answeres, I just wanted to confirm that this term bacame widley used among specialists in security field both British and Americans.

Nowadays Salafists are accused to carry out most of the relgious related acts of violence that couldn't be linked to a major terrorist organization like Jihad or El-Qaeda.

agree Nagwan Noaman : agree with the arabic equivalents but don't agree what u said about alda'wah alsalafiyyah. who is accused of hte violence acts are " gama'at alhijrah wa altakfeer".The people who call themselves salafis in Algeria aren't actually salafis they're takfeer

salafist group

"salafist" has obviously outdone "salafi" as the most common English translation/term in the respective discourse; the "st"-ending also bears some kind of additional "-ism" connotation, which can be in my humble opinion easily justified by the given context...
