English term

In the unlikely event...

English to Arabic Art/Literary Linguistics
I can't think of a standard Arabic term for the expression "in the unlikely event...". I'm trying to remember what Arabic-speaking stewardesses say for "In the unlikely event of a water landing..."

My sentence is: "In the unlikely event that a local law or regulation conflicts with the Code, you should continue to comply with the law..."

The best I can come up with right now is
...،في حال ............، وهو أمر غير محتمل

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Yasser El Helw May 22, 2007:
Excellent choice :-)
Nesrin (asker) May 22, 2007:
Thank you all for the great suggestions! I decided to go for a combination of Abdallah's, Günther's and Yasser's suggestions: في الحالات المستبعدة التي يتعارض ...الخ
I thought the word مستبعدة/ مستبعدة الحدوث was most accurate, and I liked Yasser's concise construction, which doesn't require the insertion of a subordinate clause.

Deena, thanks for reminding me of what the stewardesses say, but I'm afraid it does not, as I thought, quite fit in a legal text! :-)

Thank you everybody else, your suggestions were all very close to those mentioned above.
Nesrin (asker) May 21, 2007:
Of course I mean - I can't think of a standard Arabic EXPRESSION, not term!

agree Iman Khaireddine : Exactly. I've just posted same answer Abdallah, but didn't pay attention to yours. I would translate it this way.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I wish I could divide the points among the first three answerers, but since I can't, I'll go with the majority of agreers (is that how you spell the word?)"

في الأحوال النادرة التي يتعارض فيها القانون كذا كذا

I think that the usual translations of "unlikely" are too heavy blooded!

my version...

... ،في حال.... وهو أمر مستبعد الحدوث

This is the way I would solve it.

في حالة من الأحوال غير المرجح حدوثها

I would think this would come closest to hitting the mark. In the link below you will find (search by "FIND" the opposite i.e. "حالة مرجحة"

لا قدر الله

I know is far from being the exact translation of your sentence,
but this is what I usually hear your stewardesses say :)
Peer comment(s):

agree Ahmad Batiran : or لا سمح الله according to the request of the asker, this is really what fits in.
